Problems with the exhaust valves and cylinder head gaskets?

I know the early 1990's 4 Runner had problems with the exhaust valves and cylinder head gaskets. How would I be able to tell if either one was malfunctioning?

A compression check and cylinder leak-down test should tell you the condition of your engine.
