1996 Kia Sportage Did Shut Off Start Smoking Temp Gage Normal Oil Smoke Came

why did my Kia Sportage shut off and start smoking. Temp Gage was normal but oil smoke came out of the oil breather almost ignited.

how is the oil level?? do you service it regularly.
