1996 Chev Monte Carlo. Extremely frustrated!

I have transmission problems. The main problem is a very hard random shift from 2nd to 3rd when the car is still cool. The second problem is when I start off in the morning out of the driveway it almost feels like it starts in 2nd gear. It is very sluggish. Then when I stop and go again it is fine. I also have a problem at highway speeds and acceleration. If I hit the gas to hard sometimes it will drop way down in gear and then slam back into gear again rattling the whole car. This is also a random problem doesn't happen all the time. I have had spans of a few hundred miles with no problems at all and then one of these things will happen 2 or 3 or more times in a forty mile span.

Here is the background. I had this transmission rebuilt 1 1/2 years ago. It broke twice during the first 6 month and was fixed under warranty. After the 2nd fix the problem started. I brought it back again and again and they said they found nothing wrong. For 10,000 miles I documented the occurances and brought it back. This time they remove the transmission again and replaced a few seals and cleaned it up and said they couldn't find anything wrong inside of it. I got it back again a now and it is still doing it. I am so frustrated. (I replaced the engine after this problem first occurred due to a timing chain problem and 225,000 miles. This had no effect on this problem. It happened before and after I replaced it.)

I don't know what to do anymore. The warranty will expire in a couple hundred miles. I think the place that is working on it is totally incompetant. You wouldn't believe how many parts that have not put back on after putting the transmission back in each time. I found bolts, covers, and other hardware missing that I either had to bring it back to have them put on or I had to go the the junk yard to get. So tired of it. I am not a transmission guy. I can do engines. Maybe I need to just learn to fix these too.

Any ideas on this problem would be very helpful. Thanks

It sounds like a governor issue with starting out in second gear and shifting. The hard shift is common from a servo and spring issue. That is a common issue.

Is it a major chain or independent shop?

It is a chain called "Mr. Transmission" in the Houston area. They supposedly specialize in Transmissions.

Go to the corporate level and tell them your tale of issues. Tell them you want another trans installed and a new warranty from all the issues with this trans and there lack of being able to repair it.
