So does your starter make any noise when it doesn't turn the engine over?Also the first thing I would check is have your battery tested and make sure your battery cable's are clean and tight. Do you have a multimeter or test light to do some testing?

If your talking about a free spinnig noise its your starter. If its a grinding noise it might be the flex plate.
