COULD A LOOSE GAS CAP CAUSE MY FUEL GAUGE TO BE INACCURATE?

Tank was on empty, put $20 in the tank, (Which usually puts me right at/around half a tank). A short while after, I looked at the gauge and it read past full, which is impossible. I drove approx. 25 miles, and when I reached my destination, it was near half a tank. I checked the gas cap, and it wasnt all the way tightened. I was just curious if that could be the cause or if it is broken?

No, there is an issue with the sender unit which is inside the fuel tank.

Is that difficult and/or pricey to get fixed?

It is acessible from the back seat andpays about 1 hour in labor. The part will have to come from a dealer and you can call to get that price.
