95 Grand Am belt issues

I just got back from the mechanics and my altenator belt is loose he says that I have to get a new belt and replace it becuase its to big but I thought u could just tighten it I was wondering if he is just to scam me or not

They should have adjusted the belt if possible, otherwise a new belt should be fitted, there is no way that there was a belt that was far to big fitted before, I would go find a different mechanic I feel.
