This olds will not crank when key is turned on. I was told by the owner that if you turn the ignition on and cross out the starter it will start and run. Tried putting resistor in line of VATS. Still won't crank. #6 vats key @1470 ohms. What's keeping it from cranking.

Doesn't sound like the security system is the problem then. Do you have a multi meter to do some testing?

Alright out of the ignition switch the yellow wire should have battery voltage with the key in the start position? All these tests will be with the key in the start position. Next find your ant theft relay behind left side of dash above the inside fuse box. The yellow wire should have battery voltage both of them?As well as the purple wire to it?The yellow wire with a black tracer should have ground to it?Then your neutral safety switch should have power to the yellow wire and the purple wire? Then at your starter there should be battery voltage on the purple wire?Remember all these tests with the key in the start position.

Yes the anti theft relay should be the same. Do you get power out of the yellow wire from the ignition switch with the key in the start position?

Alright the red wire to the ignition switch should have battery voltage all the time?If so looks like the ignition switch is bad. If the red wire doesnt have battery voltage to it then check the fuse number 2 in the underhood fuse box. Its a 60 amp fuse?
