Ok, I am having a pretty worry some problem with my Pathfinder. When I start the SUV I hear a loudish whining (almost like power steering pump whine) and a metal scraping type sound. This sound continues and gets louder upon pressing the gas or picking up speed. Once the SUV reaches 4th gear the sound goes away. I know its not the power steering pump as power steering is working great, power steering fluid good and full, and no sound change when turning the steering wheel. Also it sounds like it is internal towards the top of the motor. Any ideas of what I'm looking at here and how to fix it?

Spray water on belt first and see if sound changes if it does replace belt and tensioner. Otherwise try to locate sound better like timing cover, heads, etc. It may be your timing belt as well.

Ive already tried the belt thing to no avail. It sounds as if it is around the plenum or the valve cover area to me but really hard to tell. The timing belt could make a loud whining noise and stop when the vehicle is in 4th gear?

Well you may not hear it in 4th. It cold be a cam follower or something similar so either have a local pro listen to it for a better opinion or pull the valve cover in question and physically look for anything worn. Noises are very hard for us to diagnose on here.
