My AC compressor went out on my 95 mercury sable. Repair is going to be costly. Is this a necessary fix? I wanted to make sure it won't affect the alternator or alternator belt.

It's necessary if you want the ac to work, if not they it would be ok if you disconnected the electrical to it. The reason is that every time you turn on defrosters the ac would kick compressor in. Other wise it would freeze up and fry the alternator belt.

What liter engine? You can find a belt w/o an AC or dummy pulley in place of the compressor
