Why my Cougar wont blow hot heat until I put RPM up to 2 then I get heat go back to idle and it get cold again

I start the car let it warm up and turn on heat and get cold air until I press the gas rpm go to 2 and I get good heat let off gas gradually go cold air car dont over heat I let it sit and idle for 1/2 hour do over heat

Check the thermostat and water pump impeller
