Jimmy shift problems

I have a 1995 four door 4x4 gmc jimmy. 4.3l. Most times when you just start up the vehicle it shifts fine and the speedometer works fine. Then the next time you put it in park then to drive again, the spedometer doesnt work and wont shift past second gear. Any ideas?
