My alternator needed to be replaced and now my friend and I cannot figure out how to put the tension belt back on it.

How did you remove the belt? The tensioner has a cut-out in it, you use the proper rachet drive or breakover bar in the cut-out, the tensioner is spring loaded, pull up on it. Note the diagram, also note the engine litre size and vin.
