95 Cadillac Eldo wont shift out of 1st gear

I have a 1995 Cadillac Eldo Touring Coupe. It shifted hard, from 1st to 2nd, and service engine soon light came on. Now it will not shift out of 1st. What could it be? Could it be as simple as needing transmission fluid? I cannot find where to check the fluid anywhere under the hood. Please help!

Need to have trans scanned for codes see what turned on light. Trans stick on top of rear pan coverright side atend of transaxle

Pressing and holding 'off' and 'warmer' on the climate panel with the key on, and holding until all VFD segments light up, will enter on-board diagnostics. From there it will display diagnostic trouble codes. PCM/ECM codes are the ones to be concerned with, record them and reply to post. Chances are it has a broken shift solenoid. Low fluid will give you performance issues, but not necessarily as specific as no 1-2 shift.
