I put my foot on the brake pedal and the pedal travels almost to the floor. It was just fine minutes before. I tried pumping the brakes back up and doesn't work. There is some modest stopping power but not much. What's the deal?

Either a line has broken or your master cylinder h as failed. Have a pro look at it and see if you have any fluid in master reservoir.

I checked the master cylinder and it is full. I checked around the car as well and there is no evidence of fluid leaks. There is a clicking sound from the steering column area every time brake pedal is pushed for approx 15-20 seconds and then disappears.

Then check up there and see if the brake pedal has become disconnected but you said you have some brake so it leaves me to believe the master has gone out on it. Without seeing it there isn't much more I can tell you
