My 4runner 1994 the check engine light flash fast when I put the swith on when I start the engine smells like gas and have no power and only get 3000 rpm sometimes the light turn off and the engine run perfect the code I got 42 on check engine ligt and also in o/d light

Code 42 is a fault with the Vehicle Speed Sensor and this would result in the O/D light flashing and erratic gear shifting.

Our database does not have any testing information for this component. The VSS is inside the meter cluster and if the speedometer is working ( it is cable driven) you have a fault with the meter cluster. Most likely you would not be able to use the cruise control.
