My friends 94 bonneville will start and I can get it to idle but very softly. If I hold the throttle at 2000 then let off it dies. I am not familiar with this particular situation. Could it just be a vacuum leak? Or is there something else that I should look into. Thank you

The first thing to check is for a vacuum leak. Check intake vacuum at an idle. Make sure it is within the manufacturer's specs. If it isn't and is low, then you most likely have a leak, If that isn't the case, check the idle air control valve. It is responsible for maintaining the engine idle speed.
