Can I remove the front driveline from a 1994 AWD Explorer and still be able to drive the vehicle?

I have a 1994 Ford Explorer AWD. The front driveline has gone bad. Instead of spending 700.00 to fix it I would like to know if I can just pull that driveline out and have only a two wheel drive. If so. Are there any issues that I will need to deal with or extra parts to buy?

I believe. According to the mechanic. That where the front of the driveline enters the housing has began to strip out. Im really not sure because I havent looked myself. It makes an awful noise. I know its not my cv joint because I did check that.
