Strange heater problem

1994 bmw 325i convertible. The heat works, but not out of the front dash vents. When the heat is on, it will blow hot out of the defroster, and out of the floor. If I turn the dial to blow out of the dash vents, it will blow hot for about a second or 2, then start blowing ice cold winter air. Any ideas?

The problem sounds like the blend door has a broken or misbehaving actuator motor. BMW calls the system IHKA. It has the ability to be scanned with the proprietary BMW software, go to your friendly local BMW repair facility to have the system scanned. Keep in mind that BMW uses a strategy of not blowing hot air out of the center vents, only blended air.

Step 1 - A heater cannot operate unless the engine is full of coolant/antifreeze. If coolant level is low check the system for leaks.
