My engine gets very hot while driving and cools as I go faster.

I have a 93 Saturn sc2. It tends to heat up after about 10 minuets of driving. The gauge gets very close to the red. As I drive faster the engine starts to cool down again to way below the half way mark. I thought it was the fan at first but I checked that and it was working fine.

Maybe bad thermostat. Inexpensive too try.

Just to add to this one does your radiator cooling fan come on at 3/4 on the temp gauge?Then cool down to about half way on the temp gauge?See if it does that in park if so the coolant temp sensor radiator fan and thermostat are all working. Also do you still have your spring loaded air dam hanging down?If not the car will overheat in stop and go traffic and around town driving. Even if everything else is working correctly.
