Remove the face panel screws and remove the cover. The unit is bolted in by 4 screws. Be carefull of the electrical connectors. Remove 1 at a time.

I have removed the screws panel and the radio out and I still can't get the connections in the back of the heater control off or even get the heater control out

You may have to reach behind the unit to disconnect the wires.

Hard to say why you canot get it out without seeing it as it is very clear in the instructions that it comes out the way I told you.
