Neutral safety switch location

I need to change the neutral safety switch on truck its on the bottom of the steering column on top it looks like it just snaps off and on how is it removed and does the switch need to be in a certain position to work correctly the switch I have rotates around left to right should it be to the left or right to line up with something inside to column to work correctly? Thank you

Hello,

This switch is adjustable and you will need to install both screws first before the adjusting begins. I think they are 5/16th or 8mm. I like to set them so the starter working really well. You might need to lower the column. The part is #3 in the diagram. There will be a rod end sticking up out of the column which the new switch will need to fit into. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

I'm putting a '93 4l60e with no nss. In a '95 truck with a nss. What do I do to switch it? Does it even need to be connected at all?

Good morning

the newer one is mounted on the side of the trans by the shifter.

No, you do not need it but it is there to prevent the truck from starting in gear and also gives you back up lights.

I took the picture and enlarged it, the first one looks top have the neutral safety switch but I can not see where it would work on the other, I may be wrong but if that is the case you would have to run the wires up into the dash to the steering column to a the switch

I was just thinking. Since you are upgrading the transmission and am currently using your existing neutral switch and you continue to use the column, then you can just continue as you are right now. That way you have reverse lights and it will be protected to start in park and neutral only.

Does that make sense?

Electrical problem V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 90000 miles

I am having a problem with the neutral safety switch, well from what I was told anyway, I was having problems with the truck, and the mechanic told me to replace the neutral safety switch, so I did that, now nothing is happening, the motor wont even turn over, its a good battery, and a new starter, so I want to make sure I am doing the right thing. I think I have replaced the right thing, but don't know for sure, it's the little plastic thing on the steering column on the inside of the truck right?

Hello,

the neutral safety switch is either located down on the transmission right on the gear selector arm or on the steering column. If you replaced it, you may have it out of adjustment

My back-up lights aren't working. I've looked up the issue online and found out that it might be the neutral safety switch, i've also ruled out the bulbs, I have replaced them both. I bought a "haynes" book for my truck and it said that my neutral switch is located at the bottom of my steering column near my firewall. The only problem is that my steering column doesnt have a neutral safety switch on it. So i'm confused/ frustrated with this whole project altogether. I just want to know how to get my backup lights to work, without having to pay for a mechanic to do it. Please help me!

If this is a manual it's on the trans, if it's an automatic it's on the steering column it should be about 4-5" from firewall.
