1993 Buick Park Avenue transmission issue

My dad was driving his park ave and the transmission just went out, so he parked it on the side street. 2days laters after it snowed real bad, my dad and I went to move the car and I just happen to see if it would do anything and the car drove off with no problems.
When we made it back home I said lets just let it run for a while. To let it get real hot to about normal temp, we did that and tried to drive around the block to see what will happen we got around the corner and it just went out again.
Ive had transmission problems befor but nothing like this. Can somebody give me a little insight please.

Is the trans fluid clean and full? Has the check engine light come on?

Yes the fluid is at its level and pretty clean, someone told me it might be the pump.

It could be something like that; however, rarely do they go bad. Has the check engine light come on?
