How do I adjust the belt tensioner on a 1992 v6 corsica?

It's supposed to adjust itself? It's spring loaded. Are you changing belts or is your belt too loose? They do go bad and lose tension although the usual reason is idling wheel bearing is shot/wheel itself is worn.
