My brakes used to lock down after driving a short distance causing the front rims to get extremely hot. I made an attempt to adjust the front floating calipers which caused the brakes to not function at all. What could be the cause of the initial problem, why did adjusting the calipers completely remove the brake function, how do I solve the overall brake function issue? The car is a Mercedes 190E 2.3 1991.

Disc brakes are not adjustable so I don't know what you did there. You have some type of hydraulic issue that needs to be diagnosed. It could be a bad master cylinder or contaminated system.
