The E34 M50 cars had several issues, slipping out of drive is going to take some back and forth with you and I. What is the exact meaning of slipping out of drive? Is it going to a lower gear, is it not going into converter clutch lockup, is it pendulum shifting? The indicator logic comes from the gear selector switch, check to see if the wiring is compromised. The EGS may also need an updated chip. EGS is the electronic transmission module. The serial number on the tranny will be the determining factor.

Sorry I am not as knowledgeble regarding the technical terms you are asking about for example "is it not going into converter clutch lockup, is it pendulum shifting?". I have no clue. Let me attempt to respond. Bye 'Slipping out of gear' I mean the full shifting range, from lower to higher gears, no longer functions. The trans stays in highest gear and will not downshift at stop signs, etc. Usually I can cure this problem by simply pulling back with modest pressure on the shift lever and when I do (usually) the transmissing re engages the availability of the full gear range. I then may not need to pull back on the shifter again until the problem reoccurs. When this happens the dash display goes from ED to just E, but returns to ED when the shifter is pulled back and trans is re engaged. Ocasionally, when I start the car, the trans indicator display is blank and the gear is locked in the highest range, until I stop the car and restart it. This usually returns the display and trans to normal operation. From what you have said I am guessing the gear selection switch is worn or the EGS needs replacement. I have no idea how to approach this RnR or where the EGS or selection switch is located. Is is something I could do myself? Hope this helps. Thanks for your interest and time!

EGS needs an updated chip, not replacement. The identification plate on the side of the transmission has the serial number, get that number and repost it here and I will tell you the part number of the chip and how to replace it.

I looked toward the lower front of the transmission and found a plate. As best I could read it the numbers/letters are as follows:
WBAHD63M13J66092 and below that sequence: 212613.

The identification plate is on the left side rear of the transmission main housing, just above the rear pan. Go to Realoem. Com and put in this part number: 24001219109 This will show the overall view of the tranny.

I found the plate but was difficult to read. What I got was:
EM - - - - LB
F15 - - - - - (could not read the balance)
Don't know if this is enough?

Before we go into the expense of changing things, I want you to look at the shifter selector switch at the center console, is it broken or has coffee spilled into it? When you disconnect it, does the display change?

Is the "shifter selector switch" directly under the shift handle bezel and can I pop that bezel off without breaking it? Sorry, but the age of this vehicle equals brittle plastic parts and I want to use the proper technique to lift the bezel. Thanks

I pulled up the console cover and there is a multi wire snap-in switch to the right side of the shift lever. When I disconnect it the range indicator ( P, R, D, 3, 1 ) disappears, however, the "E" light remains lit. Of course while removing the switch I broke one side snap clip, but it seems to be holding ok with only one side secure. To repeat my issue, the P, R, D, 3, 1 indicators "sometimes" disappears while driving but a slight rear pressure on the shift lever brings the light back on and reengages the correct level.

A small adjustment might be all that's needed. The shifter gets to the tranny by cable. Check to see if any of the mounting bolts or cable ends are loose. The adjustment is at the pivot point, loosen it and see if it moves a little, tighten it up and see if the issue goes away.

Can you direct me to the location of the "pivot point". How can I access this and or trace the cable. Is it accessible from under the car or through the consol? I have only a floor jack so getting any room underneth the vehicle is a challenge. Thanks

The pivot is at the transmission. It might be better if you got the car up on a lift.
