Transmission is shifting hard from first to second gear

Own a 1990 Toyota Celica gts, and when you go from first it slags, but other gears shift smoothly. I know it is something with tranny but unsure. Tried adding tranny fluid. Does not do all the timeAlso, how hard to change power steering pump for average joe? What would garage charge? Maybe pump not gone, but what are the signs it is. Thanks

When you say it slags, do you mean there is a delay? If so, check shift solenoids. As far as the pump, they can be a pain because of space. A garage would charge around 100 bucks labor. As far as the pump going bad, usually they make a groaning noise when turning or you will experience the sensation that you are losing power assist at times.
