Hello,

The fuel pump is not accessible through the top of the gas tank (trap door). Only the float for the gas gauge. Remove the rear seat cushion for the access (service) hole.

For the pump you must remove the tank here is a guide to help you see what you are in for when doing the job.

Please let me know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Best, Ken

Four cylinder front wheel drive automatic 165,000 miles.

I have an 1989 corolla that has a carburetor, 1.6L engine. I am having the fuel pump replaced but I have a few questions.
I am guessing it is mechanical since it has a carburetor, but I am not sure. Is it most likely mechanical?
Also, I am not sure if it is located in the tank or outside?

Your help is appreciated.

Where is the fuel pump located? And is it easy to fix? Can I buy a used part from used auto parts?

The electric fuel pump is contained within the fuel tank. On 1988-1992 models, it is necessary to remove the fuel tank from the vehicle in order to reach the pump. This is not a do-it-yourself repair so please do not attempt to repair unless you have experience to do so. Fuel pump is something that you would not want to buy used. I suggest purchasing dealer recommended fuel pump as other brand fuel pumps have a tendency to fail much quicker.

Short fuel pump and +B on diagnostic link, fuel pump should run, if it does, then most likely not a fuel issue.

You can test fuel pump by shorting +b and fuel pump on diagnostic link. If pump runs, then fuse, relay, if not, then pump. Or wiring to it.

Four cylinder front wheel drive manual 150,000 miles.

Engine stalled then will not start. Good spark, compression. When I spray a fuel into air cleaner it will run then shut off when I stop. Removed fuel lines to engine and nothing comes out. However, I do not know the location of the fuel pump. Is it in the tank, where do I access it from? Cheers

Hi there,

The fuel pump is an in tank pump which you access via a cover plate under the rear seat.

Might have an access through the trunk or the backseat. If not siphon the fuel then drop the tank.
