I touched a ratchet from the spark plug to the back of the alternator, now I have no power anywhere. It is on a 1998 Dakota. What have I done?

Cute thing you did. You probably burnt out the fusible link in the power distribution box. Check that for the most likely cause. Most auto parts stores will carry it and it will need to be spliced in.
