Hello, I have a 1987 caprice classic with a 305 to I was driving and it just died on me. It tries to crank but wont start the tow truck guy said that because it didnt have an air filter that maybe the problem what do you think?

No, that is not the direct cause of no start. He may be thinking you have dirtied/harmed your MAF sensor by running with no filter. That is a possiblity depending on how long you have run this way and the road/air conditions.
