I have a 1986 Pontiac Fiero with a 2.8L V-6. I have changed my alternator 3 times and the car will run when the battery is disconnected, I am aware of the damage it could cause the alternator, but it also drains and does not charge my battery. I am unsure where to begin with resolving this issue.

Have the alternator tested for a faulty diode in the regulator, this can cause a drain back, also a current drain test will help, tart here.

If it takes a day or so to drain the battery I have two things to check.
1 open the front and watch the ****s on the headlight motors. See if one of them twitches about every 20 seconds or so.
2 take the trunk light out and see if the battery stays up.
