86 Nissan D21 Z24 engine

Just replaced head gasket and upon reassembly the engine races from 600-1500 rpm every 10 seconds at idle. No vacuum leaks. Also tachometer races up and down sporadically as well. Help!

Were the valve clearances checked/adjusted?

Give the throttle body a good cleanup and see if problem is resolved.

Check for vacuum leaks and check the IAC.
