I have a 1986 CJ7 that was retrofitted with a 4.0L fuel injected engine before I bought it 12 years ago. It spends a lot of time sitting but has always started fine. A few weeks ago I went to start it and it turned for about 30 seconds and then dead silence. Had the battery checked, was fine. Replaced the voltage regulator, starter and alternator also checked out fine, replaced the ignition safety switch. Still nothing. Any ideas? The wire going to the coil is active even when the key is in the off position. I plan on keeping this jeep forever but cant afford to replace the wiring harness right now if that is the solution.

Check to see if the starter relay is ok or not. It may not be sending power to starter. See if one of the fusible links are burnt as well they are available at auto parts. Just tes for power on both ends see that they have same voltage. Make sure battery and cable end at starter are same voltage as well.
