I put a new battery in a couple of months ago and it started at a quarter of the turn. Now, as the spring is finally here and the thing should start no problem, I cannot for anything in the world start it. I thought it's the gas so I went and put 10 gal of gas in, I thought I flooded the carb I left it sitting, then even pushed it downhill as the starter wasn't turning over the engine.

I don't know what's going on, I see a lot of rust around the solenoid, tried cleaning it, is the solenoid gone?
Do you
have the same problem?

I'M YOUR CJ GUY

IT IS TURNING OVER OR NOT?

OR IT IS. AND WON'T CATCH/ BUST OFF/ FIRE UP. OR PLAIN OLE START?

I HAVE LOTS OF PICS AND TESTS WE CAN TRY

FIRST ONE (IF IT IS TURNING OVER).2 TABLESPOONS OF GAS DOWN THE CARB THROAT-ATTEMPT A "START". WHAT IS THE REACTION?

PLEASE READ MY ANSWER IN THIS LINK AND CHECK OUT THE PICS AT THE END----THIS WILL ALSO APPLY TO THE CONNECTIONS ON YOUR SOLENOID

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/2000-ford-taurus-lx

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS INSURING MR. BATTERY IS AT 100%. A POPULAR AUTO PARTS STORE CAN TEST IT, IN OR OUT OF THE VEHICLE---USUALLY THIS IS A FREE SERVICE

I STILL HAVE LOTS OF "FIX PICS"-AND "IMPROVEMENT PICS" FOR A CJ

I CAN SHOW YOU HOW TO SAVE $$$ AND IMPROVE YOUR JEEP.....WHAT REGION OF THE COUNTRY ARE YOU IN?

It tried to turn over just didn't start. The battery was at 100%, I took it down and slow charged for 30h

My guess is it's the starter/solenoid issue. I saw the initial trouble, took a brush to the connectors on both and it kept trying to start. I'll have to take off cables, degrease, clean and reconnect and see what that gets me. Will check your pics and other threads as well.

Thanks for the fast response, I am in Vancouver, BC, Canada, by the way.

Hi Medic,

I cleaned up all solenoid connections and cables with 1" wire wheel on my drill and changed all washers and nuts to new ones. I think I have a parasitic draw somewhere because my battery was done but I tried to jump it with the other car and definitely the entire thing wants to come to life.

My only concern is fuel (carburetor). I took the top off and pumped manually but I don't see any fuel coming in, I felt the smell, but didn't see it gushing into the carburetor.

I just put 15gal of gas in the tank so there's plenty of fuel. Night came and couldn't work on it anymore. Old Barney is stuck on the side of the road at the bottom of my cul-de-sac street.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Marius

OK, MY NOVEL JUST GOT LOST DURING SUBMISSION

I WRITE A SMALLER VERSION THIS TIME

HAVE YOUR BATTERY TESTED AT A POPULAR AUTO PARTS STORE AFTER YOU CHARGE IT - THIS IS NORMALLY FREE OF CHARGE - YOU STILL MAY HAVE A BAD BATTERY

LEMME KNOW THE DEAL - IF "ADVANCE AUTO PARTS" IS AVAILABLE TO YOU - YOU CAN DO THIS ON YOUR PHONE IN THEIR PARKING LOT !- YOU MUST BUY IT ONLINE, SHOULD YOU NEED A BATTERY (OR OTHER STUFF)

THIS "PROCEDURE" IN ANOTHER FORM MAY WORK AT OTHER AUTO STORES. SEE THIS LINK

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/2001-dodge-neon-milage-just-want-put-fliuds-their-locations

YOU MAY NOT HAVE FUEL IN THE BOWL (YET)

VERIFY YOUR FUEL PUMP IS WORKING BY TAKING THE RUBBER LINE LOOSE AT THE CARB - STICK IT IN A QUART JAR - CRANK FOR EXACTLY 15 SECONDS - LEMME KNOW HOW MUCH FUEL IS PUMPED INTO THE JAR IN 15 SECONDS

IF YOU SEEM TO GET PLENTY, GO AHEAD HOOK IT BACK UP, DUMP THE 2 SPOONFULS OF FUEL IN THE THROAT TO PRIME IT. IT SHOULD "RUN" ON THIS AMOUNT UNTIL THE BOWL FILLS UP

SHOULD YOU "WANT" ANOTHER CARB, I CAN POSSIBLY SHOW YOU A BETTER AND CHEAPER ROUTE, WITHOUT PUTTING THE EXACT SAME TYPE BACK ON. A FEW MONTHS AGO I HELPED A FELLER DO THIS, IT WAS INEXPENSIVE AND TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE TIME AND MONEY INVOLVED IN "REBUILDING" HIS (AND STILL HAVING A "OLD" AND "WORN" SAME OLE CARB) THIS WAS THE BETTER CHOICE!

LAST 3 PICS ARE "RICK'S JEEP, OLD AND NEW CARBS"

SEND ME SOME "GOOD" PICS/ LEFT SIDE/ RIGHT SIDE/ OVERHEAD VIEWS OF YOUR ENGINE - HOOD LAID ON THE WINDSHIELD FRAME - AIR BREATHER REMOVED

BELOW IS THE CORRECT WAY YOUR FUEL SHOULD GET TO THE CARB AND RETURN TO THE TANK

KEEP IN MIND THIS IS MY 1977 CJ 5 W/ 258 WITH A 390 HOLLEY 4 BBL - FORGET MY "BELLS AND WHISTLES" ( REGULATOR AND MINI GAUGE )

I HAVE REROUTED (RE-BENT) STEEL LINES

THE "PLAN" OR "SET-UP" IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS WHEN IT WAS BRAND NEW. YOURS SHOULD BE THE SAME TOO

PLEASE DON'T TELL ME YOU HAVE AN ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP!

IF YOU ARE STILL HAVING "NO CRANKING" ISSUES, LEMME KNOW, I HAVE MORE TESTS FOR YOU!

YOUR TURN

No electric fuel pump but I think the needle valve might be stuck. I don't think I have a nice fuel filter like yours :)

What carburetor do you have in mind and how much would it be?

THE REASON I WANTED PICS - IS SO I COULD SEE WHAT IS STILL LEFT OF YOUR ORIGINAL SET-UP

THAT EXPENSIVE STEPPER CARB (CARTER BBD LATER YEARS) IS USELESS IF THE COMPUTER STUFF/ SENSORS/ PARTS ARE NON-FUNCTIONING, MISSING, BROKEN, OR MODIFIED. THE AGE OF THE PIECES/ PARTS MAY PLAY A PART IN THEIR FUNCTIONING

IN OTHER WORDS, THE CARB WILL NOT DO WHAT IT WAS DESIGNED TO DO, IF IT CANNOT RECEIVE INFO TO THE COMPUTER TO TELL IT WHAT TO DO

HAVE NO FEAR, IT WILL STILL PERFORM LIKE AN OLDER JEEP, LIKE PRIOR TO '81, WITH A OLDER STYLE CARTER BBD, LIKE ONE FOR A '79

MUCH OF THE EXTRA STUFF CAN BE REMOVED ALONG WITH GETTING RID OF A BUNCH OF VACUUM LINES. YOUR JEEP WILL PERFORM WELL WITH ONLY 2 VACUUM LINES FOR THE ENGINE. IF YOU HAVE POWER BRAKES, MAKE THAT 3 LINES

YES, THEY WENT UP - BUT YOU CANNOT BUY A REBUILT ONE AT AN AUTO PARTS STORE FOR LESS THAN $279 (I LOOKED AROUND A BIT)

"NEW" MEANS - VIRGIN - NO WORN PARTS!

I CAN HELP YOU THRU REMOVING STUFF IF WANNA PURSUE THIS OPTION

LOOK AT MY "MODIFIED" '77 - I UPGRADED MY PRESTOLITE IGN SYSTEM TO "MOTORCRAFT" WHICH CAME IN 1979s ON UP - I HAVE MADE SO MANY THINGS ON THIS JEEP "USER FRIENDLIER"

BUT LOOK AT HOW LITTLE STUFF IS NEEDED TO MAKE IT RUN GOOD

I TOOK OVER 100 PICS WHEN I INSTALLED MY "CLOYES" TRU-ROLLER TIMING CHAIN SET. BELOW ARE A FEW THAT REFLECT HOW LITTLE CRAP IS NEEDED ON A 258. YOURS COULD LOOK REALLY CLOSE TO MINE IF YOU DONE SOME "FIXIN"

I DRIVE THIS ONE AND MY WILLYS ALL OF THE TIME (MY PRIMARY TRANSPORTATION). I GET RIGHT AT 18 MPG WITH MY HOLLEY AND I HAVE POWER IF I "GET ON IT"

DOWNSIDE IS, THE CARB WAS NEARLY $400 AND THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS NEARLY THE SAME

WITH A CARTER BBD, I NORMALLY GOT ABOUT 15 MPG, SOMETIMES 16. I HAD TO BEAT THAT! - SO I GOT THE HOLLEY

Hey Doc,

Carb's been rebuilt, new solenoid, new distributor cap because we found a little too much oxidation on terminals, but the best things of all: NONE were really needed.

Took my dad 5 min to find that the positive cable of the battery had become loose from the led terminal. The screw that holds the copper in rusted over the winter and was letting the copper wire escape. It had been wrapped with some electrical tape for protection but that's where the problem was. Needless to say the amount of "verbal abuse" about my mechanical abilities won't ever stop.

It turns on a quarter, it runs smooth as ever. I think to the very least I'll change the gaskets soon and give it a rebuild once I'm settled into my new home.

Really appreciate the help man, I definitely learnt a lot in the process.

Kids are fine, thanks for asking

Have a nice day bud
