1986 dodge aries with rough idle, and back fires when pedal is applied going up a hill, computer code 12 which is memory standby power lost per the aries repair manual. Have replaced the distributor pickup, rotor, cap, coil, EGR valve, PCV valve and map sensor - also regapped the plugs and have checked the vaccum hoses for leaks and cracks. I have a new power unit (dodge speak, it is located on the fender next to the battery and may be called the ECU in other vehicles), but have not installed it since the box says to fix whatever is causing the problem first. It could be the power unit itself that is problem.

The car has 75,400 miles.

Any ideas?

I think its the spark plug wires need to be replaced. Then test drive it to see if this gets it fixed.

You have covered everything else. The only thing left is the power unit.
