My dads 1985 Ford F250 is not running right. It has a rough idle and when you rev it to get going it quits. It has been losing power for a while. My dad thinks it is the exhaust system. It is a diesel truck. It doesnt have a CAT

My answers here are just a guess, but i'll try. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? Has this motor got a turbo? Is this an electronicly controlled motor? If it does have an ECM (computer), does the computer show any codes? How many miles on motor? It sounds like it has either a weak fuel pump, or a plugged fuel filter.

The fuel filter was just recently replaced. It does not have a turbo. This is the engine type 6.9L V8 OHV 16V DIESEL.

Mixed answer you gave. Mid 80's Fords (pick ups) had a 7.3, V8 non turbo (thank you) OHV motor in them. Depending on how many miles this thing has on it, it may be worn out ! At around 250/300 thousand miles it is going to need a motor overhaul. It should have a computer in it (ECM) that controls the fuel injector timing, & this computer needs to be checked for any codes it may have stored. The only guess I can make. Is that the motor is worn out, or the fuel pump(s) are getting weak in their old age.
