When I leave the negative connected to the battery the brake lights stay on constantly, besides being illegal it is very inconvenient to pop the hood and unplug it every time I stop, any information on how to stop this problem would be very helpful

Look under your dash at the brake pedal. There are two plunger type switches, one operates your brake lights. There are two holes in the brake pedal that have plugs in them. Sometimes these plugs come out and just leave the hole. These plugs stop the plunger on the switch. You can either replace the plug or glue something over the hole to depress the plunger on the switch.
