The fuel pump on my '84 dodge ramcharger won't pick up fuel when its connected to the truck but picks up fine when taken off and manually pumped. What could be wrong?

Collapsed pickup screen in the tank. Sometimes you can blow them off with compressed air at the pipe that bolts to the pump, but have the gas cap off so you don't blow up the tank. That screen used to cost about three bucks if you want to replace it.
