JUST WANNA SHOW YOU HOW A.NAL I WAS WITH THIS WEBER
I REALLY WANNA SORTA QUALIFY MYSELF AS "TRYING HARDER THAN MOST ANYBODY"
I DIDN'T JUST GIVE UP!
WEBER ADVERTISEMENTS PROMISED A 20% INCREASE IN MPG----I WAS ALREADY ON THAT QUEST FOR HIGHER MPGs TRYING EVERY "GIMMICK" I COULD FIND.....LIKE THE OPPOSING MAGNETS ON THE FUEL LINE (THEN MY VERSION, "ATTRACTING MAGNETS ON THE FUEL LINE"), THE OLE TORNADO, ADDITIVES, TIMING CHANGES, THE LIST GOES ON
YOU KNOW, I STARTED OUT WITH NOTHING.......I STILL HAVE MOST OF IT LEFT!
THE OLE WEBER WAS NOT JUST MONEY IN MY WALLET, I HAD TO SAVE FOR IT----I WAS EXCITED WHEN I GOT IT
MY CARTER BBDs WERE GIVING ME MOSTLY 14.5-15.5 MPG, WITH AN OCCASIONAL 16-16.5 MPG
WORK WAS ABOUT 40 MILES AWAY, I WOULD NEVER EVEN CONSIDER DRIVING ANY OTHER VEHICLE, AND MY 15 GALLON TANK FORCED ME TO REFUEL, USUALLY, EVERY OTHER DAY ( I KEEP A RESERVE GERRY CAN ON THE BACK)----LATER, I INVESTED IN A 21 GALLON POLYETHYLENE TANK......ONE OF THE BEST MOVES I EVER MADE!
I'VE HAD 5 CJ 5s IN THE PAST AND NOW HAVE A '77 CJ 5 AND A 1946 WILLYS ALSO---STARTED DRIVING ON THE ROAD IN '81........NEVER CONSIDERED ANY OTHER VEHICLE AS A PRIMARY DRIVER---ANYBODY THAT KNOWS ME CONSIDERS MY JEEPS AND I AS "ONE"
I KNOW THE CJ WELL!
BUT THAT DANGED WEBER---I READ SO MANY SITES--TALKED TO SO MANY PEOPLE---TALKED TO THE PEOPLE SELLING ME PARTS---TALKED TO THE LOCAL RACING GUYS---BOUGHT AND READ BOOKS
FOR OVER A YEAR---I MADE JET CHANGES (AND OTHER CHANGES) TO THE CARB
I KEPT REAL ACCURATE RECORDS OF WHAT I DID (LIKE 11 PAGES, FRONT AND BACK) (HERE'S SEVERAL, SEE PIC 1)---I KEPT UP WITH MPG (EVERY OTHER DAY)---I'D EVEN DRIVE OUT A TANK, JUST TO SEE IF I STRUCK GOLD WITH A PROMISING COMBINATION---I KEPT UP WITH ANY AND EVERY THING I DID TO THE JEEP, WHILE I WAS AT IT......JUST SHORT OF THE WEATHER EACH DAY
I PERFORMED PLUG CUTS SO OFTEN, I WAS SCARED I'D STRIP OUT #1, SO I STAGGERED IT DOWN THE LINE.
A PLUG CUT IS WHEN YOU DRIVE AT "A SPEED", FOR LIKE 10 MINUTES OR SO (I DID,ANYWAY) CUT THE KEY OFF---PUSH THE CLUTCH IN---COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD---"PULL A PLUG" EXAMINE IT FOR BEING "TOO RICH"--"TOO LEAN"--OR A GOOD BURN IN-BETWEEN
THE KICKER HERE IS "IN-BETWEEN" SORTA-KINDA LOOKS ALL THE SAME (AT LEAST TO ME). THIS IS WHERE ONE MUST SELECT THE THE BEST JET----THERE ARE ALSO "AIR BLEEDS" WHICH IN COMBINATION WITH A JET AND EMULSION TUBES, TURNS THE AIR/FUEL MIX INTO, WELL, BASICALLY A "FOG", FOR LACK OF A BETTER TERM-----ALL OF THIS IS A COMPLICATED BREW
PICS 2 AND 3 ARE PICS OF "GOODIES" I STILL HAVE, AFTER GETTING RID OF THE CARB. BY THE WAY, I HAD THAT TOP OFF SO MANY TIMES, I STRIPPED 2 OF THE SCREWS-----JUST THESE GOODIES ALONE, COST AS MUCH AS THE DARN CARB
THEN THERE'S THE BOOKS---HERE'S A PIC OF ALL I HAVE LEFT---MINUS THE CARB---MINUS A PACK OF PAPER OF CRAP FROM THE INTERNET (PIC 4)
NOW THE OBJECT OF THE GAME FOR ME WAS MEGA MPGs-------I WAS NOT GETTING ANY BETTER THAN MY BBD---AND I WAS PULLING MY HAIR OUT---I HAD JUST AS MUCH TIME FOOLING WITH THE WEBER AS I HAD WORKING AS A PLUMBER!
THE WHOLE KEY TO MPGs IS GETTING AS CLOSE TO A 14.7 TO 1 AIR/FUEL MIX, AS POSSIBLE "MECHANICALLY" SETTING UP THE CARB
A NEW CAR HAS A COMPUTER THAT CAN KEEP IT ALMOST ON THE MONEY--ALL OF THE TIME
WITH THE CARB, IT'S GETTING JUST THE RIGHT PARTS WORKING IN UNISON, TO MAKE A CARB DO THE BEST IT CAN.....USUALLY "SET" TO WHAT THE VEHICLE DOES THE MOST (HIGHWAY CONSTANT SPEED---RACING---POWER) USUALLY YOU DON'T GET IT ALL IN ONE PACKAGE
NOW THAT I HAVE THE HOLLEY AND FOUND OUT SOME REALLY WELL EXPLAINED STUFF, EVEN A TOUCH OF THE MODERN CAR----I GET 18 MPG!!!
NOT EXACTLY WHAT I WAS GRABBING AT----BUT IT'S 3 MPGs BETTER THAN THE BBD!!!!
I SHOULD BE HAPPY-----I WANT MORE!
IF YOU HAVE THE WEBER 32/36 "PROGRESSIVE" CARB------ONE MUST 1ST GET THE PRIMARY BARREL TO PERFECTION----BEFORE YOU CAN EVEN THINK ABOUT SCREWIN' WITH THE SECONDARY------THE SECOND BARREL MUST "COMPLIMENT" THE 1ST ONE IN "MIXTURE", AS IT OPENS
YOU WOULD TRIP OUT , IF YOU SAW HOW MANY TIMES, I FLOORED IT, AND IT FELL FLAT ON IT'S FACE AS I ATTEMPTED TO JET IT RIGHT
LOOKING BACK............... IF I HAD THE "TECHNOLOGY" I USED ON MY HOLLEY, I COULD PROBABLY MAKE THE WEBER WORK A WHOLE LOT BETTER

THE WEBER BOOKS ARE INFORMATIVE---THE HAYNES EXPLAINED A LOT---THE DGEV SECTION WAS NOT THAT GREAT---BUT LOOKING AT HOW THEIR "FAVORITES" OR MORE POPULAR CARBS, I WAS ABLE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW THE AIR/ FUEL MIX COULD BE "MIXED" USING DIFFERENT PIECES, FOR DIFFERENT (I GUESS "DURATION")---SPEEDS--RPMs---ETC
IF YOU ARE GONNA BE A WEBER GUY--BEST GET 'EM AND START READING!---IT'S REAL SCIENTIFIC----AND BORING----YOU WILL NEED THIS KNOWLEDGE (AT LEAST HOWs AND WHYs) FOR 2 REASONS----ONE YOU'LL BE WELL ON YOUR WAY, WHEN IT ALL "CLICKS TOGETHER" IN YOUR HEAD!------YOU MUST BE KNOWLEDGEABLE ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO "DELETE" MIS-INFORMATION THAT WANNA-BEs FEED YOU! -----DOING THIS "RIGHT" WILL BE A TASK---JUST HAVING IT RUNNING, WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO ME
