I have a 1983 CJ7 with low mileage (I-6). It had been a while since I started the Jeep so two months ago I tried to start it. The battery was fine, the engine turned but it would not fire up and start. I added fresh gas, pulled the fuel line at the fuel filter to drain it and then the Jeep started. I drove it around a bit. That was two months ago. Now I am having the same issue and fresh gas is not helping. Starter turns the engine but it will not fire and start. Battery is charged. Engineer will start for a moment with starter fluid. But only for a moment. Where should I start?

LET'S PULL THE RUBBER FUEL LINE OFF OF THE CARB (ADD TO IT IF NECESSARY) TURN THE ENGINE OVER AND SEE IF FUEL COMES OUTTHEN STICK IT IN A QUART JAR AND SEE IF YOU CAN KEEP IT RUNNING WITH STARTER FLUID FOR 3O SECONDS. LET ME KNOW HOW MANY OUNCES YOU CATCH IN, AT LEAST 15. SHOOT FOR 30 SECONDS

OVERNIGHT OUR SITE LAYOUT GOT CHANGED---I'M STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW IT WORKS NOW

TELL ME WHAT'S BEEN CHANGED OR MODIFIED ON YOUR JEEP---I'M GONNA SEND A FEW PICS---I HOPE---IT MAY REQUIRE SEVERAL ANSWERS TO DO IT NOW---BEFORE I COULD POST UP TO 10 OR SO IN ONE ANSWER. BUY NOTHING. TILL YOU CONSULT WITH ME.I HELP VERY WELL WITH THE WHOLE PICTURE

ARE YOU STILL SET UP (LIKE IT SHOULD BE) LIKE MINE IN MY PIC?

I HAVE BEEN SORTA DOMINATING THE 2CARPRO CJ 5 AND CJ 7 FORUMS FOR THE LAST 2+ YEARS---ASK ANYTHING AT THIS POST AND I WILL KEEP ON ANSWERING

Thank you for the quick response. I pulled the fuel line off just before the fuel filter and had my wife crank it. Fuel came out strong.

Also, I poured a bit of fuel in the carb and this allowed the engine to run, but only for 10 seconds or less.

Not much has been changed or modified on the Jeep that I am aware of. I attached some photos below.

Update. I ran the Jeep by pouring gas in the carb. While she was running (about 20 seconds) I checked the fuel line before the fuel filter and gas was being pumped. It filled up a 12oz cup quickly.

LOOKS LIKE FUEL MAY NOT BE AN ISSUE

INSURE YOUR FUEL FILTER'S SMALL (1/4") N. IPPLE IS AT 12 O'CLOCK AND FEEDS THE RETURN LINE

THE 5/16" FROM THE CENTER FEEDS THE CARB----LOOK AT MY PICS ABOVE

WITH THE JEEP ----NOT RUNNING----!

REMOVE THE AIR CLEANER--WITH A FLASHLIGHT (OR MIRROR TO REFLECT LIGHT)---NOT A LIGHTER!LOOK DOWN IN THE CARB AND ACTUATE THE THROTTLE LEVER. DO YOU SEE 2 PERTTY STREAMS OF GAS SQUIRT INTO THE THROATS (THE ACCELERATOR PUMP WILL BE THE REASON IT DOES THIS)?

HAVE YOU MONKEYED WITH SCREWS OR ADJUSTMENTS?

IF SO,

BAD johns190 ! BAD johns190 !

WE CAN FIX THIS---I JUST NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING YOU AND/ OR YOUR EVIL BUDDIES HAVE DONE!

I WILL RESPOND AFTER WORK. SOMETIME AFTER 20:00 HRS EST

HOW DID YOU FIND THIS SITE. IT HAS BEEN A CHALLENGE FOR ME THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS---IT WAS REVAMPED AND DOES NOT OPERATE THE WAY IS DID 3+ DAYS AGO

AGAIN. DON'T BUY NOTHING YET.I CAN SHOW YOU HOW TO SAVE, SHOULD STUFF OVER $50 BE NEEDED

A SQUIRT BOTTLE WITH FUEL, MIGHT ALLOW YOU TO GET IT TO RUN LONGER

YOUR TURN

I have not, nor has anyone messed with the screws in the carburetor.

The fuel filter is in the correct position. Return at 12 and carb line at center.

I was googling my issue last night and found the site.

I removed the air cleaner and pulled the throttle. Gas was not sprayed. This made be think it might be the fuel filter so I detached the fuel line at the carburetor and turned the key. Gas sprayed everywhere. Next, I took off the gasket from the carb and took out the pin, put it back in then re attached everything. Now pulling the throttle sprays gas in the carb. So that is good, but the engine will not idle on its own. I have to press the gas or pull the throttle or spay gas in the carb to keep it going.

I have not messed with anything on the carb.

I have attached some more photos.

So like this procedure will hurt nothing---on a Carburated Model Vehicle.

I saw this in a Owners Manual, for a "Toyota?"; Way Back there, in a auto salvage yard

That Rig (a truck) came w/ a top; similar to a spray paint can. In the glove box, still sealed in a bag

The Instructions said (basically) This was its use:

WITH RPMs HIGH (not enough to blow your motor) Slap on the "aerosol top" or wet rag, Hold the Wet Rag Down Hard, Till Engine Dies---WHILE KEEPING THE THROTTLE OPEN (seen w/ other hand)

Only Rev the engine and hold it at 2000-2500--or so RPM, (do not try to Blow It Up!)

The throttle is held open until the engine completely dies (held open until engine hits "0" RPM)

When you get to RPM--Put the "CAP" ( any aerosol spray can top w/out holes in it that "fits" or a soaking wet rag over the ; tight over the CARBURETOR

This action of not getting outside air, forces the engine to suck the carb's Internal Passages Clean, within the carb, using the Engines Own Vacuum. (AND IT DOES A DANG GOOD JOB TOO!)

REMEMBER THISWhen you do this procedure. You "FLOOD" the Carb. But That's OK, Hold the throttle WIDE OPEN and crank on it. It will start really soon!

Always keep a towel and a fire extinguisher handy.A backfire might set the flooding on fire. Smother it with the towel, if it should (not happened with me yet!). Use the extinguisher, if the towel don't work!

You must remove the Air Cleaner Retainer on the carb to get a good seal with your rag or aerosol top

When I do this to the carb, I may do it 2-3 times. Using a Device that will seal the carb. Or a DRIPPING SOAKING WET TOWEL/RAG/ETC AS SEEN IN PIC BELOW. Next step is going to be adjusting the the carb (I'll talk you thru that too)

Your rag exercise worked well. I have a tachometer under the dash, so I was able to use that (photo attached) to hit the correct RPM level. After doing the rag exercise five or six times I was able to start her and she ran for a while in fast idle without any fuel assistance. That is a great sign. As you were saying, I still might need to tune the carb some, but I will wait for your guidance as things have turned out well so far.

I am leaving tomorrow for and will be gone until November 2nd. I was thinking about selling my Jeep but now I think I’ll hold on to it. Thanks for your help so far. This is really fun.

I WAS RUNNING OUTTA CJs TO WORK ON!

THEY SELDOM BREAK........SO I DON'T SEE Y'ALL MUCH!

SOMETHING TO SORTA STATISTICALLY GO BY..........

YOU CAN KINDA VERIFY THIS BY GOING TO THE "HOME PAGE"---LOOKING AT THE MANUFACTURER LIST ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE----CLICK ON "JEEP"----THEN LOOK AT THE LIST OF MODELS----KEEP IN MIND, THEY BEGAN IN 1940 AND 1941........THERE IS LESS THAN 1000 JEEP QUESTIONS ASKED ABOUT MODELS PRIOR TO 1986....YET...THERE ARE STILL SO MANY OF 'EM ON THE ROAD

"CJ 5" REIGNED FROM 1955-1983

"CJ 7" 1976-1986

5s & 7s MOSTLY WERE THE SAME '76-'83, SO INFO IN EITHER OF THEIR FORUMS DURING THAT PERIOD CAN APPLY TO EITHER

NOW LOOK AT THE "MODERN AND COMPUTERIZED" VEHICLES---LOOK AT HOW MANY QUESTIONS ARISE CONCERNING THEM (NOT ONLY IN "JEEP"-BUT THE OTHER MANUFACTURES AS WELL) THESE PUPPIES HAVE ONLY BEEN AROUND SINCE 1986 OR SO

CAN YOU TELL I'M BORED?

BETTER HANG ON TO YOUR BABY--THEY'RE NOT GETTING ANY SIMPLER TO REPAIR

JUST COME BACK WHEN YOU ARE READY....I'M NOT GOING ANY WHERE

WHILE YOU ARE OUT---PAWN SHOPS ARE A GOOD SOURCE TO FIND THOSE "ANCIENT TUNE UP METERS" (DWELL TACH AND A TIMING LIGHT)....YOU MIGHT COULD TALK 'EM DOWN ON PRICE TOO!

THIS IS ONE OF "MOST" OF THE CJ QUESTIONS THAT HAVE COME THRU SINCE 2009 (WHEN I BROKE MY FOOT AT WORK AND HAD SEVERAL COMPLICATIONS AND WAS LAID UP FOR MOSTLY OVER A YEAR) MY SISTER WOULD COME BY AND "SCHOOL ME" ON HOW TO WORK A COMPUTER [I HAD NEVER TOUCHED ONE BEFORE, I WAS AT AGE 45].....I FOUND THIS SITE, ASKED MY OWN QUESTION, AND HAVE BEEN HERE EVER SINCE.

I DID NOT LIKE SEEING CJs RECEIVE "ONE LINER ANSWERS" WHEREAS THEY WERE SORTA LEFT OUT IN THE COLD ON WHAT TO DO TO PERFORM SOMETIMES EZ REPAIRS ...SOME PEOPLE EVEN GAVE ANSWERS AS IF THEY WERE COMPUTERIZED/ FUEL INJECTED MACHINES!......NO ONE EVEN SENT A PIC TO EXPLAIN STUFF!

I MADE IT MY MISSION THEN, TO DO ALL I COULD, TO HELP---I'VE BEEN DIYing THE TOTAL OF 7 THAT I HAVE OWNED SINCE 1981 (STILL HAVE THE '77 AND '46) AND AIDED ON SO MANY OTHERS LOCALLY

SO, SORTA WHAT I'M SAYING IS---IT'S A GOOD THING YOU DIDN'T "CALL" PRIOR TO 19 DEC 09!

HERE'S JUST ONE EXAMPLE (LOOK AT OTHERS IF YOU LIKE) OF A VAST VARIETY OF FIXES FOR ONE FELLER...HE'S 18 AND "NOT SCARED!"---HE DIYs WITHOUT MUCH/ANY FORMAL AUTOMOTIVE TRAINING....AND DOES VERY WELL!----MANY THINGS IN THIS ONE THAT WOULD BE LIKE YOURS

Hey, I will be back in town this weekend and would like to work on the Jeep.

There are a couple issues I would like to fix.

1. When stopping at an intersection the Jeep dies often. I assume this is a carb tuning thing, but I will wait for you to tell me.

2. The headlights only work as brights. The normal low beams do not work. I assume there is just a disconnected wire somewhere, but again, I'll wait for you to tell me.

I GOT YOU COVERED ON BOTH ISSUES

I WANT MORE INFO BEFORE WE MESS WITH THE CARB

ARE YOU EMISSIONS CHECKED IN YOUR AREA....IF SO.....IS YOUR "OLDER VEHICLE"....GIVEN ANY SLACK........WHAT EXACTLY IS REQUIRED?

IF YOU ARE IN THE SAME SITUATION I AM IN----WE CAN GET RID OF A LOT OF CRAP (WHICH MAY NOT HAVE WORKED AS IT DID IN 1984 AND 1985)

THIS ENGINE WILL RUN PERFECTLY WITHOUT MOST OF THE STUFF THAT CAME ON IT.......MINE ONLY HAS 3 VACUUM LINES, ONE OF 'EM ONLY RUNS THE VACUUM GAUGE ON THE DASH (IT'S NOT REALLY NEEDED)----IF I HAD POWER BRAKES, I'D REQUIRE ONE MORE

IT'S EZ TO MAINTAIN JUST A FEW "MUST HAVE LINES" THAN TO MAINTAIN A BUNCH THAT THE APPARATUS' ALONG THE WAY, DON'T WORK ANY MORE/ CAN'T BE TESTED/ CAN'T BE FOUND ANYWHERE...................VACUUM LEAKING IS MINIMIZED, NOW EZ TO FIND, SHOULD ONE OCCUR

OUTSIDE----REMOVE THE BREATHER---LAY THE HOOD ON THE WINDSHIELD FRAME GET ME PICS OF THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDES OF THE ENGINE----STAND ON THE BUMPER AND GET ME A GOOD TOP VIEW (CAMERA HELD CENTER OF ENGINE)

I KINDA WANNA KNOW WHAT STATE YOU LIVE IN, AS FAR AS TEMPERATURE GOES

WE CANNOT "TUNE" UNTIL WE KNOW THE VACUUM IS NOT AN ISSUE

ANSWER MY QUESTIONS---LET ME KNOW YOU ARE A WILLING "VICTIM"---WE WILL START GETTING STUFF "USER FRIENDLY"

I HAVE PIC AND DIAGRAMS, CAN AND WILL "DOCTOR UP" YOUR PICS AND SEND THEM BACK SO YOU AND ANY KINDERGARTEN GRADUATE CAN PERFORM THE TASKS!

"PROPER TIMING AND TUNING OF THE CARB", GO HAND IN HAND WITH EACH OTHER----I GOT YOU COVERED THERE TOO!

LETS MOVE ON TO THE HEADLIGHTS

I'VE GOT A "HUNCH" AS TO WHAT MIGHT BE WRONG

I'VE ALWAYS EXPERIENCED "FLASHING HEADLIGHTS"---YOUR ISSUE MAY BE THE SAME, BUT JST THE OTHER CONNECTOR. THIS COULD BE SYMPTOMS OF THE DIMMER SWITCH HAVING PROBLEMS

IT'S REALLY BAD IF THEY GO OUT, AT NIGHT, MILES FROM HOME, AND YOU ARE IGNORANT TO WHAT'S HAPPENED...SO YOU DRIVE REALLY SLOW, TO LIMP IT HOME.....THE HIGHWAY PATROLMAN, PULLS YOU OVER AS YOU PASS A CONVENIENCE STORE. HE JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THE SEVERITY OF "YOUR PARTICULAR DILEMMA"....AND YOU GET A WARNING, "NO DRIVEY WITHOUT LIGHTS IN THE FRONT"....THEN THE SAME FELLER GIVES YOU TICKET FOR THE 2 FLASHLIGHTS TAPED TO THE BUMPER, ABOUT AN HOUR LATER! (DON'T EVEN ASK!)

SINCE THIS INCIDENT, I HAVE SEEN IT MANY MORE TIMES. NORMALLY BOTH THE PIGTAIL AND THE DIMMER ARE RUINED FROM THE HEAT, WASTING YOUR TIME TRYING TO SALVAGE EITHER---USE DIELECTRIC GREASE ON THE NEW CONNECTORS! ABOUT $7 FOR A TUBE AT THE AUTO STORE

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_dielectric-tune-up-grease-permatex_12027861-p?searchTerm=dielectric+grease

'MEMBER, THIS IS A JEEP--MOISTURE IS A "GIVEN"----USE THIS ON ANY CONNECTOR YOU PULL APART---AND ON THE FUSES---THAT WHITISH ALUMINUM FILM ON THE METAL IS MILD CORROSION....IT IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!

IN THE PICS, THIS IS A NEW PIGTAIL (CAN BE FOUND AT MOST AUTO STORES--MOST ALL OF THE OLD FORDS, WITH FLOOR DIMMERS USED THE SAME ONE), THE BRASS FEMALE CONNECTORS ARE ALL THE WAY FORWARD....LIKE THEY SHOULD BE, THEY ARE SORTA LOCKED IN PLACE BY THE PLASTIC

WHAT USUALLY HAPPENS IS THE CONTACTS INSIDE THE CONNECTOR GET LOOSE OR CORRODED--THEN THEY GET HOT--THE PLASTIC GETS SOFT AND DISTORTED----THEN YOU LOSE THAT PARTICULAR CONNECTION (OF THE 3).........LIGHTS MAY FLASH OFF AND ON----MAYBE JUST THE DIMS---MAYBE JUST THE BRIGHTS----MAYBE YOU LOOSE POWER TO BOTH

NOW YOU SORTA FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM...MAYBE?......YOU TAKE THE CONNECTOR LOOSE.....(YOU SEE NOTHING WITHE THE "INEXPERIENCED EYE") SO.....WHAT DO WE DO?.........SHOVE THE CONNECTOR BACK ON!..............WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IS THE "HOT CONNECTOR" (NO LONGER HELD BY THE DISTORTED PLASTIC.........THE "FEMALE" CONECTOR GETS SHOVED REARWARD AND REALLY DOES NOT CONNECT ANY MORE , THEY "MAY" JUST "TOUCH"...THIS IS WHERE THE HEAT STARTS GENERATING AND "FLASHING HEADLIGHTS"....THEN "MAJOR MELTAGE" OCCURS---THEN IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO CONNECT

YOU THINK YOU HAVE IT SHOVED TOGETHER, REALLY YOU ARE SHOVING THE OTHER CONNECTORS REARWARD TOO, THE MELTED PLASTIC CAN NO LONGER HOLD THEM IN PLACE!

IN MY PIC---THE MIDDLE WIRE/ CONNECTOR IS THE 12 VOLT FEED FROM THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH---THE OUTER ONES ARE "HIGH" AND "LOW" FOR THE HEADLIGHTS (I'D HAVE TO LOOK TO SEE WHICH SIDE IS WHICH---BUT IT REALLY DON'T MATTER--THE SWITCH DON'T CARE!)

YOUR TURN.....I'M SURE YOU CAN SEE THAT I REALLY GET A HIGH, MESSING WITH CJs!

WE WILL START REMOVING THOSE PESKY TUMORS SOON!

I MAY GO GET SOME MORE SHOTS OF RICK'S ENGINE, MAY BE EZ TO SEE WHAT REMAINS AND WHAT IS REMOVED---I'LL EMPHASIZE WITH NOTES AND ARROWS

I NEED SOME REALLY GOOD SHOTS OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE ENGINE---NO BREATHER

HAVE YOU SORTA LOOKED AT OTHER CJ 5 AND 7 POSTS IN THE 2CAR FORUMS?

W/ RICK'S JEEP, WE REPLACED HIS CRAPPY ORIGINAL BBD W/ A STEPPER---WITH A 1979 BBD (RICK'S IS AN '85 CJ 7).............YOU CAN SEE A FEW FICS TOWARDS THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE, IN THIS LINK

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/1985-jeep-cj7-6cyl-258-ci-that-through-ingnition-modules-they-cookies

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES---MANY LEAVE ME IN SUSPENSE AS TO HOW THINGS WORKED OUT

I'LL JUMP ON IT WHEN I GET YOUR PICS

DID YOU GET ANYWHERE WITH THE DIMMER SWITCH?

IS MY "STYLE" TOO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?

THANKS FOR THE PICS

WISH THEY HAD BEEN TAKEN OUTSIDE---NO BIGGIE

I LIGHTENED THEM UP IN MICROSOFT OFFICE PICTURE

I'M PRESENTLY "DOCTORING" PICS OF RICK'S '85 SO THAT THE CHANGES CAN BE SEEN WELL

WE'LL GET INTO "CRAP REMOVAL", TIMING AND TUNING SOON!

IF YOU WANNA SORTA STAY CLEAN---WANNA CLEAN THE ENGINE AND COMPARTMENT REALLY GOOD?

LET'S TRY SOME PURPLE POWER---SQUIRT BOTTLE OR PUMP UP SPRAYER---IT'S SOLD IN VARIOUS SIZES. ADVANCE AUTO PARTS HAS IT

COVER THE HOLE IN YOUR CARB WITH A RAG

KEEP IT OFF OF YOUR EXTERIOR PAINT---RINSE IT WELL IF YOU DO---IT WILL NOT "IMMEDIATELY" EAT YOUR PAINT, JUST RINSE IT SOON

SPRAY EVERYTHING UNDER THE HOOD----BATTERY/ HOSES/ FENDER WELLS/ ALL!

YOU MIGHT "TOOTHBRUSH" HEAVY DEPOSITS WHILE ITS SITTING

. OR JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU'VE RINSED IT---IT REALLY TAKES OF HEAVY DEPOSITS TOO, YOU'LL GET THE HANG OF IT!

LET IT SIT FOR 5-10 MINUTES----SPRAY IT OFF HARD WITH THE GARDEN HOSE SPRAYER---NO NEED TO PRESSURE WASH IT

NOW RINSE YOUR BODY AGAIN, IN CASE YOU GOT RESIDUE ON IT

LET'S SEE IF WE CAN GET SOME "VALUCRAFT" CARB CLEANER (AUTOZONE'S BRAND)---VALUCRAFT IS THE BEST SPRAY CARB CLEANER I'VE FOUND

I'D SAY ONE CAN OF VALUCRAFT DOES THE JOB OF 3 CANS OF ANOTHER BRAND

I BUY A LOT WHEN THEY PUT IT ON SALE FOR LIKE $1 A CAN!

SPRAY THE ENTIRE CARB THOROUGHLY (NOT TRYING TO CLEAN IT, THIS PASS)---- LET IT SIT 2 -5 MINUTES----IT SHOULD BE "LOOSE" NOW----THEN SPRAY IT AGAIN----THIS TIME USE THE STRAW---AND CONCENTRATE ON STUBBORN GOO, LEAVE IT AND GET THE EZ STUFF, GO BACK TO THE STUBBORN AND TRY AGAIN

THE ONLY THING THAT MAY NEED ATTENTION IS (IF IT ACTS UP) REMOVE THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND TOWEL DRY THE INSIDE OF THE CAP--THEN RE-INSTALL

YOUR TURN

So I fixed the issue of the Jeep dying at stops.

I got into the carb and removed the venturi cluster. Then I cleaned it by spraying with carb cleaner and cleared the idle fuel pick-up tube and nozzles with a guitar string. I also sprayed the inside of the carb with carb cleaner.

This seems to have done the trick. No more stalling at stops.
