280zx valve adjustment

I have a 1981 280zx with just over 100,000 miles. Bought her 1 1/2 years ago in unbelieveably great condition inside and out and I have had nothing but smooth sailing since. Except for now the moter started making a lot of noise so I had someone look at it and they said that I needed a valve adjustment-cost 300.00. My question is what exactly is a valve adjustment? What to they do? And is 300.00 fair? And is this just the start of something bigger?

You car has hydraulic lifters, these are non adjustable, they will have to be replaced and the cam lobes inspected for wear, the price will depend on the quality of parts, but it sounds a bit cheap to be doing lifter.
