I am about to purchase a 1979 Mercedes 240D W123 and the air con. Is not working.
What is the most common problem this model Merc experienced regarding air cons not working?

Honestly, there isn't one common thing. Since it isn't working, there could be many causes that won't be recognized until someone tries to recharge the system. There could be leak, a bad compressor, a bad compressor clutch, pressure switch, cycle switch, wiring problem and the list goes on and on.
