My 77 304 ci. Engine wont fire. Just tuned it up & ran perfectly. All the suden when I gunned it turning a corner, it popped out the tailpipe. Someone said I could've jumped timing chain.I pulled the dist. Cap &it still turns. Also it was firing at least but now it wont at all even when moving vaccum advance forward or backwords. What steps should I do? Thank you sincerely J.W. Coleman

HAVE YOU PULLED A PLUG WIRE AND TESTED FOR SPARK?

. DO YOU KNOW HOW?

I CAN TALK YOU THRU MIGHT NEAR ANY CJ ISSUE. STOCK OR CLOSE TO STOCK ANYWAY!

YOU TUNED IT OR SOMEONE ELSE. GOT A TIMING LIGHT AND A DWELL METER?

HOW 'BOUT A CHEAP VOLTMETER?

1977 HAD THE CRAPPY OLE "PRESTOLITE IGNITION SYSTEM".I HAD MANY DIFFERENT BAD ISSUES WITH MINE. THE BEST THING I EVER DONE TO MY CURRENT "77 (OBTAINED IN '91) WAS TO "UPGRADE" TO THE "MOTORCRAFT IGNITION SYSTEM" WHICH FINALLY WAS USED IN ALL OF 'EM IN 1979.I HAVE NOT HAD A DISTRIBUTOR ISSUE NOW FOR YEARS!

AFTER MUCH HEARTACHE AND REPLACING THE DISTRIBUTOR/ IGN MODULE SEVERAL TIMES.I FIGGERED IF I WAS GONNA SPEND $$$ ON A PRESTOLITE.I COULD SPEND THE SAME AMOUNT ON A MOTORCRAFT. AND YES, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH USING "REMAN" PARTS.'SPECIALLY WHEN THEY HAVE A LIFE TIME WARRANTY!

THE HARDEST PART (WHICH REALLY AIN'T ALL THAT HARD!) IS TO GET MOTIVATED ENOUGH TO GET IN THERE AND MAKE THE THE FEW WIRING CHANGES

THIS IS NOT HARD, 'SPECIALLY IF YOU NOW SORTA KNOW SOMEONE WHO CAN SEND YOU THE EXACT CHANGES. WHAT A DEAL!

STARTING WITH MY 1ST VEHICLE IN 1981, I'VE HAD 2 '77 CJs, AND 5 OTHERS RANGING FROM '79-'83. ALL BEING CJ 5s. THE 1ST '77, HAD A 304.I'VE PROBABLY HELPED ON A HUNDRED OR SO, JUST HELPIN' OTHER JEEP GUYS OUT

. SO I REALLY HAVE SOME GOOD EXPERIENCE. BEEN THRU THE BAD ONES TOO. NEVER HAD ANYTHING ELSE, 'CEPT THE 1946 WILLYS I STARTED RESTORING IN 1991 TOO!

THE LAST TIME ONE OF MINE WENT TO A "PAY SHOP/ MECHANIC" WAS IN 1987. MY WIFE (NOW EVIL EX-WIFE) TOOK MY '79 THERE FOR SOMETHING STUPID, WHILE I WAS DEPLOYED.I TAKE THAT BACK.I DO HAVE THE WHEELS ALIGNED AT A SHOP. BUT I DO BUY MY OWN TIRES AND INSTALL THEM MYSELF ON A "MANUAL TIRE CHANGER". THEN "BUBBLE BALANCE"

LEMME KNOW YOUR CAPABILITIES

SEND PICS WITH YOUR HOOD LAID ON THE WINDSHIELD FRAME. BREATHER COMPLETELY REMOVED. LEFT SIDE-RIGHT SIDE--STAND ON THE FRONT BUMPER OVER-HEAD SHOTS OF THE WHOLE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. GOOD, WELL LIT PICS!

IS YOUR EMISSIONS TESTED ANNUALLY. ANY LENIENCY 'CAUSE IT'S OLDER?

TELL ME ALL OF THE MODIFICATIONS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE OVER THE YEARS

HERE'S A SECOND TEST (SPARK PLUG WIRE BEING THE 1ST)

LEMME KNOW HOW YOU MIGHT WANNA ATTACK THIS.I STICK WITH ALL CJ QUESTIONS FOR THE LONG HAUL. EVEN AFTER ONE IS FIXED, I EVEN CONTINUE ON WITH OTHER QUESTIONS. ON THIS SAME THREAD, FOR OTHER PROBLEMS!

BELOW IS A PIC OF A JEEP THAT SHOWED UP AT MY HOSE FOR SOME FIXIN'. AMONG OTHER THINGS. IT NEEDED THE DIFF JUICE CHANGED. AND A NEW PINION SEAL

LEMME KNOW YOUR LETTER(S).I'LL SEND BACK THE INFO

AS FAR AS POSI OR NOT. JACK UP THE WHEELS. TURN ONE "FORWARD" IF THE OTHER GOES FORWARD, IT IS A POSI UNIT

. IF THEY SPIN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS, IT IS A STANDARD DIFFERENTIAL

IF IT HAS BEEN "MODIFIED". THE FACTORY MARKINGS MAY NOT TELL YOU NUTHIN'

SOME POSI TRACTION UNITS REQUIRE A SPECIAL FLUID (FRICTION MODIFIER). AS WITH A FACTORY UNIT, WHICH HAS "CLUTCH PACKS" ON EITHER SIDE OF THE SIDE GEARS. NOT USING IT, TEARS THE CLUTCHES UP

SOME LIKE A "EATON" LOCKER, DO NOT NEED THE SPECIAL ADDITIVE

Yes the cover is perfectly round. The numbers are on top of differential with the A in between those numbers. Anyways when I turn left sharply it has a metal crunching sound. A little heavier than a usual wheel bearing. Is just the long splines that happens on posi rearends? Thank you jack Coleman

MY BUDDY HAS THIS LOCKER BY "EATON"......THEY AND OTHERS, MAKE DIFFERENT KINDS, I'M SURE YOU PROBABLY KNOW THAT!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZmsY2YvVsc

THE WAY WE MADE SURE WAS TO PULL THE COVER AND LOOK AT THE BOLT PATTERN ON THE CARRIER

THIS ONE DOES NOT HAVE CLUTCHES....NOR DOES IT NEED FRICTION MODIFIER (ACCORDING TO OUR RESEARCH)

I'M ONLY REALLY FAMILIAR WITH THE AMC/JEEP TRAC-LOC DIFF

HE BOUGHT HIS JEEP AND WANTED TO CHANGE ALL OF THE FLUIDS, WHEN WE GOT IN THERE, WE FOUND IT HAD A EATON LOCKER AND NOT THE TRAC-LOC

HAVING NOT MESSED WITH THIS BEFORE, WE FOUND THAT WHEN MAKING TURNS IT KINDA MAKES A LOUD RACKET WHEN THE "PENCIL SHARPENER LOOKIN'" INTERNALS SORTA SLAM TOGETHER......IT ALSO MAKES A RACKET AFTER YOU STRAIGHTEN UP AND MAYBE TRAVEL A-WAYS DOWN THE ROAD AND SORTA GIVES YOU A SLIGHT JERK TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT.......NOTHIN' LIKE JERKING YOU OUT OF THE ROAD THOUGH!

I SORTA DON'T LIKE IT, AS IT MAKES ME THINK SOMETHING IS TEARING UP!
