I HAVE 73 VW BUS AND LOST REVERSE A WEEK AGO, AND JUST TONIGHT, I LOST BOTH 1ST, AND 2ND GEARS. FEELS LIKE THE SHIFTER JUST ISN'T SLIDING OVER TO ENGAGE THE OTHER LINKAGES AND GEARS. NO EXPERIENCE WITH VW'S, SO JUST LOOKING FOR A FEW POINTERS TO SEE IF IT JUST NEEDS A QUICK FIX PROBLEM LIKE LOW HYDRAULIC FLUID, OR LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT.

sounds like a bad shift coupler'' its located just in front of the transmission conected to the shift rod ...its square in shape with a screw pin running through the middle of it and one retaining bolt holding it to the shift shaft witch comes out of the trany pointing to the front of the bus...but lucky its only a twelve dollar part and a real easy fix....good luck '' if more information is needed id be glad to help ....mechtrix.
