While driving down the road, my vehicle shut off and would not start. Now it turns over but will attempt to start?

Hi,

Most commonly when this happens, it is either a fuel or ignition-related issue. So, let's do a couple simple tests.

First, see if the engine will start if you use starting fluid. If it does and then stalls, we know it is fuel related. If there is no change, then we likely have an issue with the ignition. At that point, we need to determine if there is spark to the spark plugs.

Here is a link that explains how that is done:

Try this and let me know the results. Additionally, the vehicle has a timing belt that may have failed. If you could record it cranking and upload it for me to hear, I should be able to tell if that is the case by hearing it.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe

The Timing belt is the issue. It broke in half.

Hi,

That isn't good news. I was questioning that toward the end of my reply. On a good note, this has an 8-valve engine, so nothing was damaged internally. If it was the 16 valve, you would be looking for a different engine.

Regardless, I attached the directions below for replacing the timing belt. It really isn't too bad of a job on this vehicle.

Let me know if this helps or if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe
