I was told that my rear brakes are 90% worn and need replacing. I have not noticed any problems with the brakes - this was diagnosed when I got new tires. I am not hearing the senors either.

Seems odd to me that the rear brakes would need replacing first on a front wheel drive car. Am I just padding their pockets? When will I know I need brakes - should I wait to hear the sensor squeak?

Thanks

90% is a huge amount of brake loss. You would hear them and feel them if they were that worn. I agree with you as well, front brakes wear out much faster than rear brakes on almost every vehicle I have ever owned or worked on. May want to get a second opinion at a different shop on this one.

Thanks for using 2CarPros. Com!

The new style Volvo S40 goes through the rear brakes before the front ones do. Take it to another shop for inspection. Make sure they remove the wheels to inspect. If you only look through the rim you will be decieved. Look especially on the rear right inner pad. The brakes do not have sensors on them so you rarely wont get any noise. Also next time they tell you that brakes are low you can have them take you to your car so you can have a look for yourself. If you dont need brakes then bring it to the service managers attention about what is going on but do not put it off because if you do need rear brakes and most likely you do you will damage the rotors once you go metal to metal.
