Hi I have a 1991 volvo 740 (non-turbo) it has 130,000 miles, 4cyl automatic. Recently while driving it felt like the power waned a little and then the next day from a complete stop I stepped on the gas and the car died. Started right up. Nothing happened until yesterday when it did the power fluctuation a couple of times while driving and then turned of 3 times while trying to back up. Turned it on, put it in forward. Turned it off and started right up and was able to back up no problem. Today went to the mechanic, he said the problem was the wire from the spark plug was grounding itself on a metal part of the engine. He moved the wire over. On the way home it died again started right up. Went back to the mechanic and it died/started in the parking lot. He can't work on it for a couple of days. I had my fuel pump replaced within a year (I think ) Any idea what the problem would be?

also,
while sitting in my car with the car running and with the windows open it seems there is lots of car exhaust fumes. It was coming into the car with the windows closed until I realized that the a/c was drawing in outside air not recirculating. Any reasons for this?
thank you for your time

The way you describe it sounds like the exhaust system is clogged-up check the catalytic converter and have the fuel system check your running in the rich side.
