Here is a quick synopsis of my dilemma. I'm having excessive oil consumption with my 2007 Volkswagen Jetta GLI (2.0L turbo).

First oil change at the VW dealer 2/05/08 - 2,850 miles.

On 6/22/08 I first noticed that my car's oil was very low while checking the oil during re-fueling - 5,675 miles on the odometer. There was no oil on the dipstick, so I removed the oil cap, and a considerable amount of smoke poured out of the refill. I also smelled a pungent burning oder. I had to add almost 2 quarts of oil to register oil in the middle of the safe area on my dipstick. I immediately made an appointment with my local Volkswagen dealership to have my car serviced. The dealership's service advisor recommended to change the oil, and begin a oil consumption test.

On 6/24/08 (5,687 miles) - I began the first oil consumption test. I was instructed to bring my car back every 1,000 mile to have my oil drain, weighted, and then the drained oil to be refilled, and new oil added to VW's specification, (which was at the maximum area of the dipstick). I question that they refilled the oil so full, but they advised that is the specs from VW. My owners manual specifies that the middle of the dipstick is the correct amount to refill. Result of the test: No leaks, and no corrective action needed.

The second oil consumption test preformed on 8/14/08 (6,886 miles) - VW stated 1/2 quart low, which VW considers 1 quart per 1,000 miles is within there specifications. Result of the test: No leaks, and no corrective action needed.

The third oil consumption test preformed on 9/24/09 (7,719 miles) - VW stated 1/2 quart low, which VW considers 1 quart per 1,000 miles is within there specifications. Result of the test: No leaks, and no corrective action needed.

The fourth oil consumption test preformed on 11/4/09 (8,872 miles) - VW stated 1/2 quart low, which VW considers 1 quart per 1,000 miles is within there specifications. Result of the test: No leaks, and no corrective action needed.

My question is this a common problem with all new car engines, or is this a exclusive to the Volkswagen's 2.0L turbo engine? I have contacted two other VW dealership, but they stated that if my engine doesn't burn more then 1 quart per 1,000 miles, they cannot perform any fixes. I know that VW has had issues in the past with their 1.8 turbo concerning engine sludge. Will this type of oil consumption continue to increase as my miles increase? In the future what effects and costs, will I expect to occur? My biggest question is where is the oil being burned? VW's response to me is only that this engine uses oil to run properly. My family and I, has had four Volkswagen's with this particular engine (2.0L turbo), and none of them has had to add oil between the 5,000 mile recommended oil change regiments.

Could you recommend your thoughts where, or why my car is burning oil at this rate, and any solutions that might remedy this problem.

I would consider 1 quart every 1,000 miles excessive, if not leaking then it is burning it, could be the rings, valve seals, or possibly a turbo seal.

Your only option is to look for a garage that specializes in VW's and talk to them.

But I would also contact VW directly and explain the problem and demand a permanent solution.
