Transmission problem
1996 Volkswagen Golf Engine Size unknown Two Wheel Drive Manual 102000 miles

When turn the car on with the clutch depressed the engine sounds great. However when I let the clutch out there is a rattle sound coming from the engine. Does this have anything to do with the throw bearing?

Hi there,

I Would be suspecting the release bearing, can you feel any vibration through the pedal when you depress the clutch. To be on the safe side, get a mechanic to test it for you just to make sure.

So does this usually mean a full clutch replacement if it is in fact the release bearing?

Hi There,

If the release bearing is the source of your problems, it would be wise to replace the clutch while it is pulled apart, your call, if the clutch is in good condition, you may leave it alone, there is no actual need to replace all components for the bearing, just have a good look at where the thrust runs on the pressure plate, it there is excessive wear, replace the clutch assembly and machine the fly wheel.

Well the car is at 100,000 miles so im thinking unless the rest of the clutch is in unusually good condition I might be better off just replacing the entire clutch. With parts cost and labor cost, how much do you think it would set me back to do this?

Hi there,

I agree, do the lot and be done with it, I will have to post a estimated price a bit later, as I don't have access to the data base from this computer, and as I am in Australia, you my not see it untill tomorrow (your time)

HI there

I don't know the brand, but I would think that it should be fine, great price. I don't think that you will have a problem with it.
