Shakes or Wobbles problem
1996 Volkswagen Golf 4 cyl Manual 170000 miles

I have a golf GL 5 speed manual. I’ve only had it for about 2 months or so. Ever since I bought it it’s been nothing but trouble.

Initially the engine would stall while driving once a week or so. The intensity increased as the time went on. Funny things were and still are happening, such as the wipers turn on and it takes a few minutes playing with them to switch them off. Low beam lights (only on the right hand side) turn on and it also takes a few minutes to switch the lights off.

Only recently the engine started stalling a few times a trip especially when the car is not warm enough. Sometimes the engine starts straight away after stalling but sometimes it takes a while before it starts. The engine always cranks over but as I already said sometimes it just doesn’t want to start.

Now the engine doesn’t start for quite sometime particularly when the car has been stationary for a while (i.E. In the mornings, after work, etc).

Today it happened again. The engine would crank over but it didn’t want to start. I waited approximately 30 to 40 seconds, if not longer between each attempt. Finally the engine started after about 20 minutes. However on the way home from work the car started shaking and wobbling particularly if the gear was too high for the revs/velocity.

For example if the revs drop down to approximately 1600 and the car is in the 3rd gear it shakes and wobbles (as if it is running out of fuel) until it reaches 2000 revs or so. Then it drives finely. The shaking and wobbling happens in the higher gears, 3rd, 4th and 5th. It is not as noticeable in the 1st and 2nd gears. Also while idle (in the neutral on the lights, etc) it shakes and wobbles.

Any suggestion/answer/advice will be much appreciated.

Thank You!

You sound like you have a huge electrical problem, I suggest running a VIN check on carfax or something to see if the car has possibly had water damage, then start with fuses and wiring and move outward to to coils and distributors, your problem is with your electronics.
