The outer housing of the shift cable ripped right out of the metal end leaving the frayed cable viable and the center of the cable exposed at the engine side or where it mounts to the transmission. Shifter just flops around.

I forgot to mention. It's stuck in 5th gear. When it first happened I had 1st and 3rd gear, which allowed me to almost get it home. But I shifted to 5th instead of 3rd, it went cluck and stuck there. When I pull the clutch in, the shifter moves but does not do anything as I'm sure the severed cable end needs to be stabilized to something for the inner part of the cable to work. The severed end can be observed under the hood near the dashboard firewall on the driver's side.

You will have to replace the shifter cable, you wont be able to patch this one up.
